While the future of the Corvette ZR1 remains a mystery for now, Corvette product manager Harlan Charles said in a recent interview at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show that the company is considering a track-oriented Z06X version.
If built, this version should take inspiration from the Z06X Track Car Concept unveiled at the 2010 SEMA Show. Of course, the new Z06X version will be based on the 2015 Corvette Z06 , but with some of the elements revealed by the 2010 concept. This means the model would get lots of carbon-fiber elements, a new set of wheels, with carbon-ceramic brakes and a modified suspension. It should also be equipped with a more aggressive aerodynamic kit, a role cage and three-point seat belts — all elements required by a "non-street-legal, factory-built track car."
If built, this will be a very strange move for Chevrolet , considering that the new model may steal the thunder of the optional Z07 package. However, such a model could be a hit, considering the amazing reception the other track-oriented model — the Camaro Z/28 — received.
