BMW 2 Series Specification and Price Leaked

8:49 AM
The BMW 2 Series won’t make its official debut until the Detroit Motor Show in January but BMW’s South African website has inadvertently leaked full specification and price details of the latest addition the BMW range. The information was made public on an online configurator for the new 2 Series, which was later removed.

No official images of the BMW 1 Series Coupe replacement were released alongside the leaked information but we know the line-up will consist of 220i, 220d and high-performance M235i models. Soft-top versions of the BMW 2 Series are also expected to follow the coupe, which hits UK showrooms in March.

The entry-level 220d model will be fitted with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine developing 181bhp and 380Nm of torque. It gives the car a 0-62mph sprint time of 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 146mph. The 220d was quoted as starting from 393,000 South African Rand, which equates to around £24,500.

The 220i petrol variant uses an equally powerful 181bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine able to hit 62mph from rest a tenth of a second faster, at 7.0 seconds. Top speed is also the same at 146mph but the price is slightly lower, starting from 366,257 South African Rand (£22,800).

Completing the range is the top-spec M235i model, which uses a slightly more powerful version of the  3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine that  powers its 1 Series sibling. In the 2 Series it develops 322bhp, up from 306bhp in the 1 Series.

Performance is brisk with 0-62mph being completed in 4.8 seconds fitted with the automatic gearbox, with the manual version being 0.2 seconds slower. Top speed is limited to 155mph and the price of the M235i is from 503,079 South African Rand (£31,300).

According to the leaked information, standard kit across the 2 Series line-up includes variable sports steering, M sport brakes, sports seats, auto lights and wipers, cruise control with brake function and M sports suspension. Optional kit such as adaptive M sports suspension, satellite navigation, parking sensors and sports automatic transmission will be available.

What the leak didn’t reveal was any update on the range-topping M2 variant, which will be the successor to the limited-production 1M Coupe. It’s understood that the M235i is considered powerful enough by BMW's engineering team, and can lap the Nurburgring faster than the old 1M Coupe. Unlike the M135i, a limited-slip differential will be on the options list as part of an M235i Performance Pack.

If an M2 does get the sign-off it won't appear until late 2015 at the earliest, and is likely to feature a turbocharged straight-six engine developing around 350bhp. The M2 would have a price expected to be in excess of £45,000.
