'Field of Dreams' for Vintage Car Lovers

It's a car collector's dream. An auctioneer is putting up hundreds of classic cars for sale in a small Nebraska town. Learn how one car dealer managed to store so many autos from the 1950s. NBC's Harry Smith reports.

It’s an unusual harvest in a region known for its bounty. Instead of corn, grain or soybeans a Pierce, Neb., field is filled with classic cars – hundreds of them. The inventory includes automobiles dating back to the 1950s and some have just single or double digit odometer readings.

A car collector’s dream, the multitude of models are courtesy of small town car dealer Ray Lambrecht. After 50 years in the dealership business, he’s retiring and auctioning off vehicles he kept stored for decades.

"What he used to do was after somebody bought a new vehicle, he'd take the trade-in and drive it out to the farm or put it in a building, and you couldn't buy it,” said auctioneer Yvette Van Der Brink.  “You had to buy a new car.  And so, he was a master at selling new Chevrolets."

The auction, which takes place Sept. 28 - 29, has 500 cars on the block and includes popular Chevy models from the 1950s and 1960s.

Auctioneer Yvette VanDerBrink shows NBC's Harry Smith the collection of vintage cars that will be auctioned off at the end of September.
