Nissan Trademarks "R-Hybrid" Badge; Maybe for a Future GT-R

7:12 AM
Okay, so we all remember back in March when yours truly passed on the news the Nissan claimed the next-gen GT-R would "electrify" enthusiasts. That, in turn, sparked a fireball of rumors claiming that Nissan was working on a hybrid variant of the GT-R. Well, now we have a little more evidence of that project.

Car and Driver managed to dig up, from the U.S. patent office, an image of a new logo that points toward the hybrid GT-R. The badge reads "R-Hybrid" —don’t confuse that with the Yaris Hybrid-R Concept — but not just any "R," the same three-dimensional "R" that sits in the feared GT-R nametag.

Sure, that "R" has seen use on nearly every Nissan "R" model since the early 2000s, but this one falls right in line with the timing of a hybrid GT-R. We also understand that the next-gen GT-R is not due out until 2017, but there is a lot that goes into designing and manufacturing a super hybrid, so chances are that Nissan chose to get this trademark done quickly.

Alternatively, this rapid trademark could also mean that the hybrid GT-R is ahead of schedule and Nissan plans to reveal a concept of it very soon. Stay tuned for more details.
