Lamborghini has done it again! Just when it looked as if the small manufacturers of exotic cars had pushed power outputs out of reach, the fabulous Italian company has come back with an upgrade for the Murciélago – the Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce.
Some name! Well, the big news is that the output of the superb V-12 engine has been pushed up the power output from 640 to 670 bhp, which gives the car a stunning 0-60 mph time of 3 seconds. Top speed is around 212 mph.
In truth, this power output is not up to the monsters that generate 800 to over 1,000 bhp, but 670 bhp is plenty of power . Of course, Lamborghini could have resorted to turbos to get much more power, but in a real world there is not much point. As with all Lambos, you get four-wheel drive, giving tremendous grip and handling.
670 bhp at 8,000 rpm!
With 670 bhp (493 kW) at 8,000 rpm, and maximum torque 487 lb ft (660Nm) at 6,500 rpm, this engine is a real screamer. Thanks to variable valve timing, it runs very smoothly at low speed, and has a surprising amount of power available from 2,000-5,000 rpm. But that is mere kid's stuff to when you get up around 6,000 rpm!
More extreme front and rear end
As this is an extra model, not a replacement for the Murciélago, it is more extreme, with a redesigned front end, exaggerating the shape of the air intakes, with a carbon fiber spoiler between. There is a black air intake for the oil cooler
in the sill on the left, and there are extra air intakes to cool the brakes.
At the rear is a huge wing, mounted high up to generate plenty of down force. A smaller rear wing is an option, and with this one, the top speed is 212 mph – 'only' 209 mph if you choose the extra downforce and the big rear wing.
Lamborghini has also gone to extraordinary lengths to make the engine not only visible from above, to make it look a work of art. Hexagonal polymer plates made from transparent polycarbonate, on three levels in a carbon fiber framework give you an unusual view. The layers are open towards the rear, to help hot air get away. Just amazing!
But that is not all. The rear end of the SuperVeloce has been sharpened up, with the wide single exhaust at the center of diffusers separated by vertical panels. Above, is a full width mesh air outlet panel, and the supports for the wing. The back end is almost all matt black carbon fiber.
Stiffer frame, reinforced with carbon fiber floor
Beneath the exciting exterior is a revised version of the steel tubular frame still used for the Murciélagos, but reinforced with a carbon fiber floor, attached by rivets and adhesive to increase stiffness. All external panels, apart from the doors and roof are carbon fiber – Lamborghini has been using carbon fiber panels since Horacio Pagani set up their carbon fiber department many years ago.
The revised structure is 44 lb (20 kg) lighter than the old one, and weight has been saved in the power train and interior, so the SuperVeloce weighs 220 lb (100 kg) less than the other models.
